Apart is a great screamo band that I discovered recently. If you’re into bands like Defeater or Pianos Become the Teeth, I can almost guarantee you’ll enjoy these guys. If I knew I was about to get in a bare-knuckles boxing match, I’d want to be listening to these guys beforehand. With a heavy hitting sound, powerful vocals, and meaningful lyrics, they inspire passion and focus. Yet they know how to take short breaks from all of the craziness to let you momentarily catch your breath. Definitely one of my favorite screamo bands at the moment. The free downloads don’t hurt either.

Screamo was requested, and so it is delivered.

BANDCAMP PAGE

Whenever I’m in bed at night listening to music and Little Kingdoms comes on, I silently rejoice because all of their stuff is considerably more chill than anything else I’d enjoy falling asleep to. Little Kingdoms consists of just two guys (though it’s so high quality you’d expect it to be a full band) and should really be described as more of a twinkly post-rock band rather than emo, as most of the songs are actually quite happy. They are a combination of relaxed, drawn-out, distant, ambient-sounding vocals with soft, yet diligent and intricate, noodly guitar work. If you just want to lay back and listen to some of the most extremely relaxing twinkly f’in rad music in existence, do yourself a favor and listen to their Willow EP.

Jazz Hands is a post-punk band out of Ohio, with influences such as “ninja turtles, bill murray, and sunshine.” With plenty of noodly guitar lines and shouted, anti-socially accepted behavior lyrics, they’re sure to please the gripes of many a college student. They even manage to throw in a short acoustic piece to showoff their clean-singing skills. A year after discovering these guys, “Tiny Hands” is still one of my favorite songs. If you don’t feel like going to stupid parties sometimes, you will definitely be able to relate to the lyrical content.

Unfortunately, I can’t find much info on these guys. The Party EP only has five tracks, and I don’t even know if the band is together anymore. Regardless, their EP is one that I listen to often. There’s not a shabby song on it, and it’s free on their bandcamp. You won’t get much more obscure than these guys, so be sure to check them out.

Palmkite - Outlaws With Style, In a Class All Their Own

Palmkite - Outlaws With Style, In a Class All Their Own

Hey everyone, I’ll be helping out with the blog from here on out, just a heads-up. I have a little bit different taste, so there should be a great mix of good tunes presented here a few times a week.

Palmkite is one of the first twinkly-ish emo bands I found, and they were a big part of what got me into the scene. Twinkly guitars and solid bass groves provide a perfect backdrop for the lazy, slightly off-key vocals. The lyrics are often eerie but always relatable, and short bursts of more upbeat shouting keeps them from being too melancholy. But for me, the guitarwork is what makes them so impressive. From quick rhythm lines to perfectly intertwined leads, the skill of the guitarists is apparent from the get go. Not that anything else is lacking. If you’re into bands like Edaline or Marquette, then be sure to check these guys out. Plus they have awesome and hilarious song titles. Both of their albums can be picked up for free at their bandcamp page, listed below, along with Facebook, Myspace, etc, links.

http://palmkite.bandcamp.com/

I’ve been listening to this band a ton through out the past few months; something about them just keep bringing me back for more. Although I must have accumulated hundreds of plays of every song in their current discography- that only consists of 7 or so songs- they still have not gotten old to me. Not even close. I can only describe the guitar work as wonderful, intricate and of course twinkly, while the vocals are a perfect mix of shouting vocals and, honestly, surprisingly legitimately good singing! Seriously, you can tell the vocalist can really sing which, combined with the somewhat distant-sounding screaming vocals, provides a very unique sound that keeps you coming back for more. They also have excellent lyrics which provide their fair share of memorable lines that you’ll find stuck in your head all day at random, helping contribute to that insatiable need to listen again. Also, judging by the posts on their facebook fan page they’re hilarious as fuck as well. All in all I find Mallard to be an excellent package all around, and every song leaves you completely satisfied by the end, hear for yourself!

When I saw Nicholas Stutsman praising this band on facebook, I had high expectations upon my first listen. I was not disappointed. Marital Roles is a considerably new skramz band from the midwest consisting of three dudes that seem to really enjoy what they’re doing (and do it remarkably well), despite the aura of hopeless devastation surrounding the lyrical content. Their Fall Demo is very much reminiscent of Merchant Ships, as noodly guitar and crashing hi-hats accompany harsh, melancholy vocals screaming out bitter accounts of times that hurt having to endure. Marital Roles is a completely penetrating skramz band that is truly doing it right already. Also be sure to check out their live recordings on bandcamp and get a taste of some of the extremely promising tracks to come. I continue to have high expectations of this band’s future work and I think they’ll continue not disappointing, so follow them early!

I had this album on repeat for weeks after it’s release, enough said. Emo Side Project’s The End of Something, to me, is very much so a spiritual successor to American Football’s s/t, whereas the raw lyrics of each song chronicle specific events of the artist’s life that many listeners may find easy to relate to. Each word seems to have been carefully chosen, resulting in just about every song having one or more heart-wrenching, memorable lines that really stick with you. Combine this with the hooking twinkly riffs (which also use the same tuning as American Football’s s/t) and mostly soft, calm vocals that get intense when need be, you can understand why I find it a justifiable comparison to this instant classic. My first complete listen of this album left me with the same feeling as having just read a really good book. The album was also entirely created by one person, which blows my mind. Please give it a listen and hear for yourself the obviously immense work that he put into it!

I’ll be posting bands I think deserve much more attention than they’re getting- possibly a few classics along the way- but mostly ones I want to help get their name out there (to the best of my ability). It’s my hope that once this blog gets on track, then people will respect the opinions of the postings here and therefore check out the bands recommended on this page. I’d also like to keep this relatively active, so if you’re interested in helping contribute to the blog, send me a message. I hope to help everyone with an interest in, specifically, the twinkly/mathrock/noodly style of emo, but also an interest in emo music in general, to discover more bands that they may like- at the same time spreading the word of these bands. I will not be providing mediafire links, but links to the band’s blog or website(s) (or whatever they have) that will allow you to either buy their music or download it for free depending on whether or not they provide that option. So yeah, expect to see postings about new EPs/LPs/etc. I also have a youtube page where I upload this type of music. However, on this blog I think I’ll be able to target people that actually are looking for this type of music more easily, and this blog will also not be limited to only music that I have uploaded to my channel. Speaking of which, shout outs to some of those other youtube channels (in no specific order) that upload similar music:

noobz0r

divinitycove89

JamesIsMyNamo2

vans4menu

64chris64

Bitterman36

IlGarret

michael678909

So yeah, best case scenario I basically hope to make this a resource where people can find good music with ease, and skip all of the searching that some of us other people have to go through.
